Overseas and residential trips
Music trips
Each Easter, the young musicians from HGS are given an opportunity to attend a residential course at Haworth. This course has proven to be a very popular social and musical experience for all involved. Approximately 70 music students usually from years 8 to 10 attend. There are at least 6 hours of band and instrument section rehearsals a day, which often include tutorials and advice from visiting professional musicians. Students organise a concert for and by themselves which, in the past, has included solo and small group performances, magic tricks, dance routines and comedy routines. The concert never fails to demonstrate the effectiveness of having young people work together in an intensive musical situation.
Geography and Geology trips
Every other year the Geography department takes a group of year 11 and year 12 students to Iceland. Sat abridge the Mid Atlantic ridge our students experience first-hand Geography in action, from caving down lava tubes to sitting on Basaltic columns and field sketches of retreating glaciers. They experience erupting geysers and can stand at the world heritage site Thingvellir which lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is an extremely successful trip that the students look forward to and will remember for many years.
Art and Design trips
The Design Faculty has a tradition of organising annual visits to the most famous museums and galleries of the world. In the past we have had most interesting visits to New York, Paris, Rome and London. It is always exciting to experience art at first hand, whether this is on the streets of Montmartre or in the Claude Monet House Museum. These trips are linked to the Art and Design curriculum and enable our students to have high quality visual and research materials, which go directly into their sketchbooks and portfolios.
The Product Design visit to Stuttgart aims to enhance learning experiences within school and broaden student’s A level knowledge by gaining experience of computer integrated manufacture systems in Porsche and/or Mercedes, and by visiting the Vitra Design Musuem and manufacturing facility for their classic design pieces.
Ski trips
Students have had the opportunity to go skiing over February half term for many years. Historically the trips have alternated between Europe and America or Canada. Recent destinations have included Banff (Canada 2019) and Marilleva (Italy 2020). The approximate cost of a European ski trip is £1200 and an America/Canada trip is £1500. All ski trips are full board and fly to the destination. These trips are hugely popular. Not only do students improve their skiing or boarding, but they also have a fantastic time with lasting memories for years to come.
Exchange trips
The MFL exchange visits to Spain, Italy, France and Germany usually take place in alternate years and cost approximately £350 for one week. The exchange school usually visits Harrogate in autumn and our students travel abroad the following spring.
