Curriculum
We believe sport is for everyone, whatever their starting point, and has huge benefits for the development of young people.
Last year saw record participation in extra-curricular sport, with students representing HGS in over 400 fixtures across 12 sports, including rugby, netball, hockey, football, cricket, athletics and more. Our students consistently demonstrated the HGS REACH values while competing with pride and commitment. Notable achievements included the Sports Academy Senior Netball team reaching the National Schools Finals ranking 17th in the country, the U18 Boys' Rugby Sevens team winning the North of England Bowl and progressing to the latter stages of the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens, and the U12 Girls' Football team winning the Yorkshire Schools Cup. The U12 Boys' and U14 Girls' football teams also reached their respective county finals. These successes are a testament to the dedication of our students and staff, whose hard work, training and support have made this year so successful. Well done to everyone involved, and we look forward to building on these achievements next year.
Once again, in addition to the normal PE timetable, there will be an extensive range of sports clubs, teams and competitive sporting fixtures on offer throughout the whole academic year. The timetable of activities will change at the end of every half term and will be published in the school bulletin and on the school's website.
At HGS, we want to give students the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports. However, there is a financial cost associated with this. We politely ask parents for a one-off voluntary contribution of £30 (or more if you feel able) per child. This covers the whole academic year and will help fund:
Without the help of parents, we would not be able to provide the extensive range of extra-curricular sporting opportunities for your child.
This contribution can be paid for using the Parent App - Arbor (using the school shop).
Selection will be based on the strengths and merits of our players as well as the opposition. Attendance to training, academic progress and behaviour will also be considered when selecting students to represent the school. Therefore, selection may not always contain the strongest players.
Teams will be selected in advance of the fixtures to allow as much notice as possible and confirmation of selection will be emailed to students. Parents will not be notified directly if their child has been selected for a particular fixture, as we want our students to take responsibility to ensure that they are available to play and to arrange alternative transport if the fixture goes beyond the normal school day. However, we will shortly be launching our new Parent Portal, which will allow you to see which clubs your child has signed up for and the details of any fixtures they have been selected to play in. You will also be asked to consent to your child taking part in fixtures and extra-curricular activities. Fixtures will also be listed in the parent bulletin each week.
In the event that a club session or fixture needs to be cancelled, we will give as much notice as possible via email. Students will be welcome to use the Learning Resource Centre until 5pm if this aids with childcare arrangements.
We welcome parent supporters at our school fixtures. However, please note that during the school day or when fixtures are held inside the school, we may not be able to accommodate supporters due to teaching commitments.
