Remote learning
Remote education provision
This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to students and parents/carers about our provision of remote education to students in exceptional circumstances.
School Closure
If it is not possible for the school to open safely or if opening would contradict guidance from local or central government, remote learning will be established at the earliest opportunity practicable the next day.
The provision will depend on the nature of the school closure but will either be work set in clearly labelled folders on Showbie or a Teams invite to join a live lesson, in line with the timetable.
We will teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible. On occasions there may be a need to make some adaptations in some subjects, for example, to change the order of topic coverage, to best support students whilst working remotely.
Students unable to physically attend school, but who are not unwell and are able to continue learning
If a student is unable to physically attend school, but is not unwell and able to continue learning, a parent/carer should contact the Attendance Officer by email at hgsattendance@hgs.rklt.co.uk to report the circumstances. We can then establish if remote learning is appropriate for the individual case. Whilst this will support the student to continue their learning, we are unable to code this as attendance at school.
Remote learning in this way is not possible if the absence from school is unauthorised, for example, a holiday.
Additional support for pupils with particular needs
We recognise that some pupils, for example, with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:
- Teaching Assistants attend the same lessons as these students and then work either 1-1 in a break-out room, or in small groups to address difficulties.
- Teaching assistants and staff in the Learning Support Faculty may also offer remote support.
- The Learning Support Faculty will communicate with Year Managers, students, and parents to support individual need.
- Depending upon the nature of the closure, some students may be able to attend school and be supported by staff in Learning Support.
