Martin Luther King image

Spotlight: Martin Luther King Day

Since 1986, the third Monday of January has been recognised by the US government as Martin Luther King Day.

This year, this falls on Monday 15 January.  Read some interesting facts below about how he inspired so many people.  What will you do on Martin Luther King Day to be of service to your community inside and outside of school?

Three facts:

  1. Martin Luther King Day is the only US public holiday that commemorates an African-American. However, instead of being a day when schools and businesses are shut (like bank holidays in the UK), Americans see it as a national day of service “a day on, not a day off”.
  2. During the 1950s and 1960s, Dr Martin Luther King Jr inspired thousands of Americans to campaign peacefully against racial injustice in the USA.  He organised and led sit-ins, marches and other peaceful demonstrations that highlighted racial and economic inequalities.  Partly as a result of his actions, the US government passed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, which said that all Americans, black and white, were equal under the law and had exactly the same rights.  On 4 April 1968, at the age of only 39, he was shot dead by a white supremacist in Memphis, Tennessee.  He had travelled to the city to lead a march in support of striking sanitation workers.
  3. Dr King saw education as critical to people being able to improve their lives.  In an essay as a university student in 1947, he wrote that ‘Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.  The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.  We must remember that intelligence is not enough.  Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of the true education.’

No Rush to Accept University Offers!:

We are aware that there are students receiving offers from universities, and some of you have received all your offers. Please be aware that the deadline to accept offers is not until Sunday 30 June. There is no rush to accept offers, and we strongly recommend that you wait and consider your decision carefully. We will be providing more details about accepting offers in the new year, but for now we suggest that you think carefully about these 3 things:

  1. Is the course content right for you? Look at the type of assessment and the specific modules
  2. Is the university and the city the right place for you?
  3. Are the grades achievable, for a firm choice and for an insurance choice?

Please come to speak to one of the team if you have any questions.
