Sustainability
Climate Action Plan: Highlights from 2025–2026
Harrogate Grammar School is proud to share the progress we have made this year as part of our Climate Action Plan. Our commitment to sustainability continues to shape the way we learn, work, and care for our environment, with meaningful action taking place across the school community.
Decarbonisation & Sustainable Travel
We have strengthened our approach to reducing the school’s carbon footprint by expanding our solar panel provision and continuing to use our biomass boiler for low carbon heating. Classrooms display reminders to switch off devices, and sustainable travel is encouraged throughout the year. Car Free Fridays, together with our Park and Stride scheme and secure cycle storage, support greener transport choices helping more than half of our students walk to school.
Waste Reduction, Recycling & Water Efficiency
Recycling has become easier and more visible across the school with clearly labelled bins in classrooms and offices, as well as dedicated pen and battery recycling points. Students and families have taken part in second-hand uniform and book exchange initiatives, helping to reduce unnecessary waste. Water saving devices are now installed across the site, students learn about the importance of conserving water, and reusable water bottles are now taken on all school trips.
Biodiversity & Outdoor Learning
Our school grounds continue to evolve as vibrant learning spaces that support local wildlife. We have expanded our wildflower and rewilding areas, planted new trees, and developed outdoor learning opportunities. Regularly topped up bird feeders and planned additions such as a bug hotel, bird boxes, and a gardening club further support biodiversity and deepen pupils’ connection with the natural world.
Climate Education & Healthy Living
Education remains at the heart of our climate strategy. Our Eco Council meets regularly to lead whole school initiatives, and sustainability is mapped across the curriculum. Students learn how to grow fruit, vegetables, and herbs, with produce contributing to healthy, sustainable food choices on site. Plant based meals are available daily, and the school continues to run Meat Free Mondays. Students also explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and take part in fundraising activities linked to environmental themes.
Community Engagement
Our commitment extends beyond the school gates. Environmental initiatives are shared with families through newsletters and eco themed challenges, and the school has supported local food banks through recent collections.
Here is our school's climate action plan showing our achievements and next steps in improving our sustainability.
Sustainability in the curriculum at HGS
Sustainability features in multiple subjects. Here is a summary of topics that students will cover linked to sustainability across the school.
