Parental Choice at 11 Plus
There is a long-established system of parental choice in the Harrogate area. (This is defined to include the Civil Parish of Harrogate and the Parishes of Birstwith, Clint, Felliscliffe, Follifoot and Plompton, Hampsthwaite, Haverah Park and Beckwithshaw, Kearby-with-Netherby, Killinghall, Kirkby Overblow, Menwith-with-Darley, North Rigton, Ripley, Sicklinghall, South Stainley-with-Cayton, Spofforth-with-Stockeld, Washburn, Weeton and the former Parish of Bishop Thornton.) Parents who live in the Parishes of Askwith, Denton, Farnley, Leathley, Lindley, Middleton, Nesfield-with-Langbar, Newall-with-Clifton, Stainburn and Weston may also express a preference for a Harrogate school when their child is 11 plus.
Prospective parents should note that Harrogate Grammar School is consistently oversubscribed each year and the Local Authority allocate places according to the criteria, as published in the school admissions policy.
Out of Area Pupils
Parents who live outside the areas listed above may also apply for entry to Harrogate Grammar School. These applications will be considered if there are any places available after all catchment area applications have been considered.
Published Admission Number
The admission limit for students into Harrogate Grammar School is fixed at 290 for 2026-27.
School admissions statistics tables
You can view and download the yearly data and statistics for school admissions via the North Yorkshire School Admissions website.
This includes details of:
- which schools has appeals
- published admission numbers
- whether your preferred school was oversubscribed
Appeals Procedure
Parents and carers may appeal against the Trust’s decision not to offer their child a place at the school. The appeals are arranged by North Yorkshire Council. Appeals submitted for a Year 7 place, for a child to start school at the beginning of the academic year in September, will need to be received by North Yorkshire Council’s deadline to guarantee being heard before the new school year starts (see below link).
Transport
All queries regarding transport are dealt with by Integrated Passenger Transport.
Home to School Travel - important changes (information from North Yorkshire Council School Transport)
Please be aware that the home to school eligibility criteria changed from 1 September 2024. One of the main changes is that transport is now provided to the nearest school to a home address, subject to the statutory walking distance. This will impact some children where the catchment school for admissions purposes is not the nearest school. To help parents identify the nearest schools to their home address there is a distance calculator available on the North Yorkshire Council website.
The Home to School Travel Policy can also be located on the North Yorkshire Council website.
