MOOCs
Students are encouraged to complete a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) of their choice during the summer break. Courses cover a wide variety of specialised topics which develop a student’s understanding of the subject area. A large number of them are written and accredited by universities. The completion of a MOOC demonstrates an impressive commitment to personal and academic development, and this will be recognised within the reference that the school will write for students. The following website details a range of excellent courses on offer FutureLearn.
TED Talks
TED Talks are influential videos featuring expert speakers from various fields such as education, business, science and creativity. These talks focus on sharing valuable knowledge, innovative research and ‘ideas worth spreading’. The are available with subtitles in over 100 languages and can be streamed or downloaded for free. click here.

Discover Teesside Residentials Taking place at Teesside University throughout July for Year 12 students. During a fun packed 3 days students take part in practical workshops to learn more about their subject of interest, experience life on a university campus and take part in social activities. This residential is completely free of charge.

North Yorkshire schools Personal Statement webinar for Oxbridge applicants |
Oxford Staff and Students are running a dedicated online Yorkshire personal statement session for UCAS applicants as they have been made aware that some applicants are anxious about the UCAS reforms. They explain that: In truth we think the new three question framework will not lead to radical differences in Personal Statement content and we have devised a workshop to run which fleshes this point out and provides insights, with examples. Join outreach staff from St Catharine’s Cambridge and Brasenose Oxford, and student helpers on Friday 9th June at 5pm for around an hour on Zoom. There’s a very short registration from here for any Year 12s who would like to Zoom in. |
