Harrogate Grammar School celebrates strong Ofsted inspection outcomes

Harrogate Grammar School is celebrating the outcome of its most recent Ofsted inspection, which recognised the school’s strong academic achievement, sixth form provision and the high-quality education, care and support provided to its pupils. As one of North Yorkshire’s largest secondary schools, serving more than 2,000 pupils, Harrogate Grammar School continues to demonstrate its ability to provide consistently high standards of education and support across a large and successful comprehensive school.

Under Ofsted’s new inspection framework, a judgement of ‘expected standard’ means that a school is meeting the high standards expected nationally across all areas. It confirms that pupils are receiving the education, care and support they should expect. Harrogate Grammar School also achieved the higher ‘strong’ judgement for both Achievement and Sixth Form, recognising areas where inspectors found particularly effective practice.

The inspection report judged Achievement at Harrogate Grammar School to be a strong standard, recognising that pupils achieve highly over time. Inspectors highlighted that pupils are exceptionally well prepared for national examinations and develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. The report also recognises the school’s focused work to improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils, with gaps between these pupils and their peers narrowing significantly. One of the report’s strongest endorsements was that “every pupil moves on to appropriately ambitious next steps with support and guidance from the school.”

The school’s Sixth Form provision was also judged to be a strong standard. Inspectors noted that “achievement in the sixth form is consistently above national averages, including for students with special educational needs and/or disabilities and those who face barriers to learning.” They praised leaders for designing “ambitious study programmes that exceed national expectations” and recognised that “students articulate their learning with sophistication because teaching is consistently effective and teachers are subject experts.” The report highlights that students develop strong subject knowledge, benefit from an extensive enrichment programme and progress confidently to ambitious university, apprenticeship and employment destinations.

Inspectors also recognised the positive culture that exists throughout the school. They described pupils’ behaviour as “impressive in lessons and around school”, highlighting the calm, purposeful atmosphere in lessons and around the school. The report notes that leaders promote these high standards through “a culture of praise and recognition”, enabling pupils to value their education, take pride in their work and build respectful relationships with one another and with staff.

The inspection praised Harrogate Grammar School’s ambitious and well-sequenced curriculum, recognising teachers’ strong subject knowledge and the broad range of academic opportunities available to pupils. Inspectors also highlighted the school’s commitment to providing experiences beyond the classroom, including adventurous educational visits both in the UK and overseas.

The report reflects the school’s commitment to inclusion, recognising that leaders identify pupils’ needs quickly and ensure effective support is in place. Inspectors commented that “pupils know who to turn to if they need help, and skilled, caring staff ensure pupils’ needs are met effectively.” The school’s careers programme was also praised for helping pupils explore a wide range of pathways and preparing them for successful next steps after leaving school.

Inspectors confirmed that safeguarding arrangements are effective, recognising that the school has established “an open culture in which safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.” This ensures that pupils feel safe, are well supported and benefit from systems that actively identify and respond to any concerns.

Headteacher Neil Renton said:

“We are delighted that this report recognises both the academic success of our pupils and the caring culture that underpins everything we do. We are particularly proud that inspectors recognised the ambitious next steps our students progress to because they achieve highly, the quality of our sixth form and the very high standards of behaviour across the school.

“The new Ofsted framework rightly sets a high bar for schools, and we are pleased that inspectors found we are meeting those expectations while recognising areas of particular strength. We also know that great schools never stand still. We will continue to build on this success, with a particular focus on attendance, inclusion and strengthening the depth of learning within our personal development programme.”

As a founding member of the Red Kite Learning Trust, Harrogate Grammar School continues to work collaboratively with schools and educational organisations locally and nationally, including the Maths Hub, Red Kite Alliance, Professional Teaching Institute and the Ogden Trust, to ensure the very best outcomes for young people.

Ian Tucker, Chief Executive Officer of the Red Kite Learning Trust, said:

“We are very proud to see recognition for the strong outcomes in such a large and successful school. The report rightly notes how pupils enjoy their learning and feel safe, valued and well supported. I am extremely grateful for all the hard work from all involved in leading the school through such a rigorous and demanding inspection."
