Harrogate Grammar School A-Level Results 2025

From Lockdown Lessons to A-Level Success: students at the Sixth Form at Harrogate Grammar School Shine

This morning, Harrogate Grammar School is celebrating the exceptional achievements of its Year 13 students as they collect their A-Level and BTEC results. The Class of 2025 – whose educational journey was shaped by the challenges of lockdown during Year 8 and Year 9 – have proved that resilience, determination, and dedication can achieve success with 61 per cent of grades at A*-B. These are the strongest outcomes the Sixth Form at Harrogate Grammar School have seen since the pandemic and overall since 2018 where, out of a large cohort of 312 students, an impressive third of grades were A*-A, up again on last year. Performing at an exceptional level, 26 students achieved four As or above.

We are incredibly proud of the progression routes students have been able to secure with these outcomes, including gap years, apprenticeships and employment. The diversity of their destinations and chosen next steps reflects our school’s focus on excellence for every child. A total of 293 students (93 per cent of the year group) applied to university to study a range of courses. Students take up courses in subjects such as physiotherapy, and several allied healthcare professions, as well as courses in the humanities, law, social sciences, arts, drama, music, sciences, maths, languages, business, and education. Based on information currently available, over 83 per cent of applicants have gained places at their first-choice university and 94 per cent achieved places overall – an incredible achievement. Four students achieved places at Oxford or Cambridge and five students gained places on medicine courses and two students are going onto study Dentistry. This year we have seen a number of students progressing to similarly competitive degree apprenticeships or employment.

Headteacher Neil Renton said:

“Layered behind every grade is a unique and sometimes complex story for every student. These fantastic outcomes, therefore, are the product of years of effort, perseverance and belief – not just from the students, but from the families and teachers who have supported students at every step. This is a group who learned resilience before they even set foot in the exam hall, and that character will serve them well in whatever comes next. We are proud not only of what they have achieved, but of who they have become.”

Director of Sixth Form Ben Twitchin added:

“I have been inspired by the way this cohort have supported each other through the highs and lows. They have shown that success and excellence comes from working hard, being kind, and staying focused on your goals. Today’s results open doors, but it’s their determination and teamwork that I am proud of, and this will lead to even more success in the future.”

Congratulations and thank you to our students.

We would like to thank students for the commitment they have shown to their studies and the outstanding contribution that they have made throughout their time at HGS. We would like to thank families for their support, as well as our teachers and all colleagues at the school, who have worked tirelessly to support students.

We wish our students all the very best in their future studies, employment, or gap year. We hope that life serves them much happiness and that they make a profound difference in their chosen field.
