The government has announced an expansion of the eligibility criteria for Free School Meals (FSM). This change will come into effect from September 2026, and means that all households in receipt of Universal Credit will be entitled to FSM. This is expected to significantly increase the number of families who can benefit from this support. Although eligibility will be expanded, it is important to note that families will still need to apply to receive the meals, even those that are currently in receipt of FSM.
Eligibility will be based on whether you are in receipt of any of the following:
Applications take only a few minutes and must be made using the Red Kite Learning Trust Online Free Schools Meals (OFSM) system. Please do not apply through North Yorkshire Council.
You can apply now, even if you are unsure whether you might be eligible. Any application is held on file and eligibility is periodically checked, so even if you think you may not be entitled at this moment, you may become entitled at a future date.
