Encore! Music Lessons

What is Encore!?

Encore! is the name of the instrumental and vocal music teaching provision at Harrogate Grammar School. It has been especially designed to provide an easy transition for all students to continue with or start instrumental and/or vocal lessons from primary school upwards.

Who is eligible for lessons?

Any student is eligible for instrumental and/or vocal lessons. You do not have to have had previous music lessons elsewhere, or be particularly gifted at music to take part. Our emphasis is on providing quality tuition for all year groups and all standards of students. If you have always wanted to try your hand at playing something or singing, have a go!

Which instruments can I learn?

Encore! can offer tuition on the following instruments & voices:

Vocals Specialising in a wide variety of styles
Woodwind Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone, Recorder
Brass Cornet, Trumpet, Tenor Horn, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
Strings Violin, Viola, ‘Cello, Double Bass
Percussion Drum Kit & Tuned Percussion including Timpani & Glockenspiel
Guitar Acoustic, Classical, Electric & Bass
 Piano Classical & Jazz
 Drama LAMDA Drama

When do the lessons take place?

Lessons take place during the normal school day (8.35am until 3.30pm) and will be timetabled so that minimal disruption is caused to the normal school timetable. In most circumstances students will not miss part of the same school lesson more than twice during the same half-term. All students will have access to their teachers Showbie Encore class to view timetables on their iPad. A copy will also be on display outside the Music Office. All lessons take place within the music department whenever practical.

How do I know that I will enjoy it?

All our music teachers will demonstrate the instruments to you and will give you the opportunity to have a go! You sign up for lessons on a termly basis and may stop at the end of the term. You can also sign up for a block of 6 taster lessons.

What if I do not have my own instrument?

HGS own a large number of instruments that are available for loan to students who are taking lessons with Encore! Please ask us for more details on the availability of specific instruments. Loan periods may need to be capped to allow more students to start particular instruments and loan prices reflect the value of the individual instrument. You might like to buy your own instrument and HGS has access to greatly reduced prices through the “Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme”. Please ask at the Music Office for more details. A word of advice, the cheapest instruments do not always offer the greatest opportunities for learning. If in doubt, ask the instrumental teacher first, who will be able to give buying advice.

How is it paid for?

Payment is required in advance of lessons starting via LunchPal

Encore! LAMDA Drama lessons

Exciting news, Drama comes to Encore!

Individual LAMDA lessons are available for all students. LAMDA’s performance examinations use drama to develop self-confidence, physical presence and a strong speaking voice.

What is LAMDA?

LAMDA is one of the UK’s oldest and most respectful awarding organisations. We will offer practical examinations in communication, and performance. LAMDA examinations improve communication skills, increase self-confidence and develop strong social skills. It has been especially designed to provide an easy transition for all students to continue with or start drama lessons from primary school upwards. For further information please click on www.lamda.org.uk

Who is eligible for lessons?

Any student is eligible for LAMDA lessons. You do not have to have had previous drama lessons elsewhere, or feel that you are particularly gifted at drama to take part. Our emphasis is on providing quality tuition for all year groups and all standards of students to improve confidence and communication skills among others.

What will I learn?

The process and preparing for succeeding in a LAMDA examination essentially helps learners, whatever their ages or aspirations, to develop a broad range of skills that will serve them throughout life. Across the range, the examinations develop a learner’s ability to:• Read easily, fluently and with good understanding

• Expand vocabulary to improve powers of self-expression
• Interpret text physically and vocally
• Improve confidence in speaking and listening
• Memorise and recall information
• Create and defend arguments
• Engage in constructive informal conversation

Who are the lessons with?

Lessons will be with Bridie Moore. Bridie has taught drama and performance in a number of places, including schools, colleges and universities. She has been teaching LAMDA at HGS for several years and has achieved excellent results with the large majority of students who entered for the exams achieving Distinction grades. Before she became a teacher Bridie was a Theatre Director with among others The Everyman Theatre Liverpool, Paines Plough Theatre Company and Battersea Arts Centre.
