NEW Sports Academy Programme

The Sixth Form is preparing to launch a new Sports Academy Programme for both rugby and netball players. Led by the Director of Sport, Tom Ryder (rugby) and PE Programme Leader, Jill Skidmore (netball), the core aim is to provide HGS Sixth Form students with the best possible environment to achieve their sporting ambitions alongside achieving academic excellence. Students on the programme will attend timetabled training sessions incorporated in the school day as well as their academic lessons. Having played professional rugby for thirteen years. Mr Ryder represented several Premiership and Pro 14 clubs as well as gaining caps for Scotland. He joined the HGS team in September 2020, after retiring from professional rugby in 2016 and moving into education.

HGS has already a rich tradition of sport. Over the years the school has produced many outstanding sports men and women who have gone on to represent both local, national, and international teams. Mr Ryder said, “The Sports Academy hopes to provide students with the necessary skills to ensure a pathway into sport beyond school at the appropriate level for them, for some students this will be professional support.”

As well as a detailed training schedule and regular fixtures, there will also be lifestyle lectures from guest speakers on nutrition, mental wellbeing, recovery, resilience. Strong links with Yorkshire Rugby Academy and Leeds Rhinos Netball have been forged and the school looks forward to working with centres of excellence. Being able to weave this work into the academic demands of Sixth Form life enables the students to be challenged and to excel both in the classroom and on the pitch.

Director of Sixth Form, Mr Twitchin, said, “we are delighted to be launching this exciting and ambitious new project. Harrogate Grammar School has a proud and successful history in sport across the curriculum and the new Sport Academy will build upon these strong foundations. This new programme reflects the school’s commitment to supporting students to realise their ambitions.”
