Outstanding success for our Netball teams

Saturday 27th January, 7am myself, Miss Skidmore, and Miss Jackson and 18 committed, hardworking Netball girls headed off to Hymers College, Hull to represent Harrogate Grammar School in the U14 and U16 National Schools Regional Netball Tournament. This is the first time Harrogate Grammar School have had two teams through to the Regional Rounds in the same year with both teams qualifying as North Yorkshire Champions in the previous round in November.

U16 Team (Alexa Callard, Martha Hillyard-Fearn, Freya Sugarman, India Russell, Holly Sugarman, Katie Robertson, Ella Hall, Poppy Markham and Nicola Charlesworth)

U16’s headed to the tournament as North Yorkshire Champions. The girls knew they would have to play their very best netball against some tough competition from other schools within the Yorkshire Region. After a flying start winning our opening games, we were pipped at the post against a strong Grammar School at Leeds team. The girls fought back in the following games with some outstanding shooting by Holly Sugarman and Lex Callard to take victory over some competitive teams, including Ashville. Heading into the 6th crucial game against Woodhouse Grove we knew this would be the decider between 2nd and 3rd place. With some outstanding Netball played by both teams it was a dominant Grove team who came out on top.

U16s finished an admiral 3rd place overall, a phenomenal achievement for a team made up of students from the year below.

U14 Team (Imogen Smail, Pernille Rhodes, Abi Sorrell, Stella Ashman, Connie Russell, Charlotte Richardson, Emilia Rivet-Jones, Emily Vincent and Issie Thompson)

U14’s headed to the tournament as undefeated North Yorkshire Champions and were very excited to represent Harrogate Grammar School. After a rocky, nervous start drawing a couple of games the girls dug deep in some very wet and windy playing conditions to take several victories. Knowing that every goal counted as they headed into their final deciding end-to-end game against Bradford Grammar School who were also fighting for 2nd place. Staff and parents could barely watch however, the girls kept their composure to claim victory. The table was tight meaning we had a nail biting wait for the tournament presentation to confirm our place. It had to go down to goals scored of which there was 1 goal in it and that goal belonged to Harrogate Grammar School to take 2nd place, behind Grammar School at Leeds. Players, teachers and parents jumped with delight as the girls collected their medals.

U14’s are now through to English Schools National Finals held on 17th March at Stanborough School (Welwyn Garden City). The National Schools Competition is the biggest schools competition in the netball calendar, which will be an amazing experience for the girls.

This is the biggest achievement ever seen for Harrogate Grammar School Netball, which is all down to the hard work and dedication of students and staff.

Many thanks to all involved, umpires, scorers and parents for your support. Bring on NATIONALS in March.
