Kids’ lit quiz
What do David Beckham and mythical beasts have in common? They were both included in the questions in the Kids’ Lit Quiz held at King James School on Tuesday 18th November.
The tension was palpable as the teams waited with bated breath for the results at the end of a gruelling 10 round quiz on literature. Two teams from Harrogate Grammar School sat with fingers crossed, in the middle of a hall filled with over 100 students, waiting for the markers to make their final assessments.
Twenty-five teams took part from more than 15 schools, and the competition was fierce. In teams of four, students had to answer 100 literature questions, many of which even stumped the audience. At the end of each 10-question round, the compere, Wayne Mills, announced the winners of each round, who were then presented with a pack of books by guest author, Martyn Bedford.
The Harrogate Grammar School A team (consisting of Amy Rees, Tilly Bowering, Amelie Davies and Aaron Elberg) took 2nd place in the competition, being only narrowly beaten by the winners. It was a very close-fought battle, and there were only a few points in it at the end. They won £15 in book vouchers each, which will most likely be used in preparing for next year’s competition!
The Harrogate Grammar School B team (Niomi March, Elise Abbott, Max Jeffries and Tom Richardson) did particularly well in one of the rounds, beating all the other teams to win their own stack of books.
Amy Rees even beat off the entire room to answer one of the hardest questions in the quiz – one normally reserved for the World Finals of the competition!
