Children’s author, Curtis Jobling, talks to students
The author Curtis Jobling, known for his teenage series Wereworld, and perhaps more famously as the creator of Bob the Builder and Raa Raa the Noisy Lion, visited Harrogate Grammar School recently. Students from Year 7 and 8 were joined by pupils from Western and Oatlands Primary Schools for a talk about Mr Jobling’s life and works. In a lively and entertaining presentation, students discovered the processes that go into developing characters as well as benefitting from a demonstration of Curtis’ illustration skills.
He stressed to students that the key to success in the world of creative writing was that you need to have a passion or hobby that could then be brought into your own writing. Students were fascinated to learn that Curtis had spent much of his early life in the library, and that despite his massive success in the field of children’s literature, his dream was always to be involved in animation. Students particularly enjoyed their introduction to “Curious Cow”, a character designed and made by Curtis for Nickelodeon Television.
The students all enjoyed the talk, which was perfectly aimed towards the audience, saying that they loved his sense of humour and the speed with which he could draw his characters, even adapting well known figures, such as turning Bob the Builder into a werewolf!
